On December 5th and 6th, Berchtesgaden is filled with an ancient custom: the traditional Buttnmandl and KramperllaufThis spectacular spectacle attracts numerous spectators every year, who eagerly follow the "Bassen" as they make their way through the streets. The Buttnmandl-Bass of the German army, which was founded in 1963, is particularly impressive. The Buttnmandl, wrapped in straw, and the wild-furred Kramperl first visit the families at home before gathering in the center of Berchtesgaden for an impressive spectacle. For the mostly young spectators and curious tourists, the figures with their hand-carved wooden masks, heavy cowbells and traditional rods of life are a fascinating sight and a piece of living history that brings Berchtesgaden to life during Advent.

The car park at the Salzburg Ice Arena is much cheaper (1 hours free and then 1 euros per hour). From there it's about a 2-minute walk to the old town.

Just a short drive from our hotel is the Hellbrunn Advent Magic, which opens its doors from November 21 to December 24, 2024.
