Things to do
in Berchtesgaden
The most beautiful things to do in Berchtesgaden and surroundings
Königssee (Kings Lake)
Only 15 minutes from the hotel
The Königssee, a fjord-like mountain lake about 7 kilometres long, which is considered the cleanest lake in Germany because of its emerald-green, crystal-clear water and particularly high water quality. With a depth of 192 metres, it is also the deepest lake in Bavaria. You can discover the Königssee during a boat trip. Since 1909 only electric boats have been used here, which glide silently across the lake.
The red onion domes of St. Bartholomew Church, probably the most photographed sight in Berchtesgaden, are breathtakingly beautiful and a hike above the church takes you to the Ice Chapel, a glacier with a natural ice cave. The Obersee at the end of the Königssee is one of the most beautiful places in Berchtesgaden and the 1-hour boat trip there is definitely worth it.
After the boat tour we strongly recommend to take the Jennerbahn up to 1.800 m and enjoy the unique view over Berchtesgaden.

The Eagle's Nest offers the best panoramic view in Germany and is, together with lake Königssee, one of the most beautiful sights in Berchtesgaden. At an altitude of 1834 meters you can enjoy the breathtaking view far above the roofs of Berchtesgaden. With good weather conditions you can see up to 190 kilometres far. The Eagle's Nest was built in 1938, was a project of Martin Borman and, contrary to widespread belief, not a gift for Hitler's 50th birthday. As beautiful as the Eagle's Nest may be today - Hitler himself visited it only about 10 times. For fear of bomb attacks and because the long way there seemed too risky and time-consuming to him.
However, it was spared from bomb attacks and in 1952 it was turned into a restaurant and at the same time opened to the public. So today you can easily reach the Eagle's Nest by bus from the Obersalzberg car park (at the documentation centre with bunkers).
Once you reach the top, you go through the long tunnel to the shiny golden elevator, which finally takes you to the top. Be sure to walk to the summit cross. From there you can take one of the famous photos of the Eagle's Nest yourself.

While the historic salt mine was opened in 1517, salt has been mined in Berchtesgaden since 1193. With the "white gold" Berchtesgaden succeeded in the Middle Ages and gained economic power. On a guided tour through the adventure salt mines you will learn a lot about salt mining. The 2 wooden slides, which are the highlight of the tour for many visitors, take you deep underground to an impressive underground mirror lake. All this of course in a miner's overall and the entrance with the mine train.

Jennerbahn cablecar
Only 12 minutes from the hotel
The newly built Jennerbahn takes you comfortably up to the summit at 1800 meters. The new Jenneralm - the restaurant at the top station also provides delicious food and refreshment. Sit down on the spacious terrace and enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the Berchtesgaden mountains. However, you will get the most beautiful view from the observation deck at the summit of the Jenner.
You'll have to take a little walk for that. A 400 meter long hiking trail leads you up to the platform. Here you can expect a breathtaking view of lake Königssee and miles of views in all directions.
In summer the Jenner boasts countless beautiful hiking trails and in winter you can ski on perfectly groomed slopes.
Make sure you stop at the middle station when you visit the Jenner.
Not only is the Jenner middle station a popular starting point for beautiful tours (for example to the Priesbergalm or Gotzenalm and the lookout Feuerpalfen).
After a short walk you also reach the "Beschneiungsweiher", a pond, that is used for making snow during the winter time. Doesen't sound interesting? You're wrong! Due to the great location of the lake, surrounded by the massive Berchtesgaden Alps and a unique view of the Watzmann, it is an absolute jewel. The mountains are reflected in the clear water of the mountain lake and the unique idyll invites you to relax.

The education and information centre in the city of Berchtesgaden inspires adults and children likewise in the permanent exhibition Vertical Wilderness.
You can watch whole film series about the animal and mountain world in Berchtesgaden and everything is very interactive.

The Hintersee in the small village of Ramsau near Berchtesgaden is considered the epitome of an idyllic mountain lake. A walk around the lake shows you the beauty from all sides. The crystal-clear, emerald-green water, the mountain panorama reflected in the lake and last but not least the breathtaking enchanted forest (Zauberwald) that crowns it all. A fantastically beautiful excursion.
For photographers lake Hintersee is most beautiful in the early morning hours!
Only 20 minutes from the hotel
Between the rugged rock walls of the Watzmann and Hochkalter, right at the beginning of the Wimbach valley, an impressive natural spectacle awaits you! The Wimbach rushes through the narrow gorges of the Wimbach gorge (Wimbachklamm). A successful cooling off on hot summer days and definitely a highlight of your holiday in Berchtesgaden.
As the Wimbachklamm is very short, we recommend a hike to Wimbach castle (Wimbachschloss) and possibly Wimbachgries.
