Mirabell Gardens

The Great Parterre, a central area of the Mirabell Gardens, is dominated by the majestic Pegasus Fountain, which is an impressive sight. The baroque fountain, designed by Georg Raphael Donner, shows the winged Pegasus, the symbol of poetry, and is surrounded by a balustrade on which other sculptures are enthroned.
Another highlight of the Mirabell Gardens is the Zwergerlgarten, which delights both children and adults with its imaginative and lovingly designed dwarf figures. The orangery is open all year round from 09:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m.
The hedge theater and the dwarf garden are closed in winter. The Mirabell Gardens is barrier-free accessible.

Rose garden and orangery

History of Mirabell Palace
Mirabell Palace is not only an impressive architectural monument, but also a testimony to Salzburg's eventful history. Originally built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau under the name “Schloss Altenau” for his lover Salome Alt, the castle has seen many changes over the centuries.
The magnificent baroque complex was further expanded, embellished and renamed under Prince Archbishop Markus Sittikus. He gave the Mirabell Palace its current name, which translated into Italian – mirabile means “admirable” and bella means “beautiful”. Among other things, the castle received its magnificent gardens, which are now known as the Mirabell Gardens. These enchanting gardens are richly decorated with sculptures, fountains and floral arrangements and provide a wonderful setting for walks and relaxing moments.
After a devastating fire in 1818, Mirabell Palace was rebuilt in the classicist style. The current appearance of the castle is characterized by the simple elegance and clear lines of classicism. Particularly worth seeing is the Marble Hall, which is considered one of the most beautiful wedding halls in the world and is often used for concerts and events.
Mirabell Palace has served as the seat of the Salzburg city administration since 1947. Nevertheless, parts of the palace and the Mirabell Gardens are open to the public and are among the city's most popular attractions. Mirabell Palace is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 18:00 p.m.
The Marble Hall is open on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. and on Tuesday and Friday from 13:00 p.m. to 16:00 p.m. It is not possible to visit the castle while events are taking place.
Admission is free.
Mirabell Palace as a film set
Mirabell Palace and the Mirabell Gardens are in fact known far beyond the borders of Salzburg, not least because of their role as a film set for the famous film “The Sound of Music” from 1965. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer played the main roles in this film and many of the memorable scenes were filmed in the picturesque gardens and Mirabell Palace. Since then, these places have attracted visitors from all over the world who want to follow in the footsteps of the von Trapp family.
