Up through Oberau, back via Obersalzberg
From Lampllehen, reach the road via Unterau and Oberau in about fifteen minutes. We’d take the northern approach, continue across the high section and pass Ahornkaser on the southern side before returning through Obersalzberg to Berchtesgaden.
Allow half a day for the drive, viewpoint stops, a walk and something to eat. The road itself is 15.4 kilometres; the time you spend outside the car makes the outing. Car parks along the route let you choose stops to suit the light and weather.
Mountains on one side, the Salzach valley on the other
On the high section, the view opens into Austria, towards Salzburg and, in clear weather, the mountains beyond as far as Dachstein. On the Berchtesgaden side are Hoher Göll and Kehlstein, with Watzmann, Hochkalter and Untersberg appearing from different viewpoints. Stop in more than one place; each gives a different perspective.
For a short walk in dry, snow-free conditions, follow the path from the summit car park to the cross and return along the ridge. A longer option follows the walkway along Hahnenkamm towards Ahornkaser. In winter, choose according to snow and ice; when the paths are uncertain, enjoy the views beside the road.
A table with Hoher Göll outside
Ahornkaser stands directly beside the road, with parking at the house and a view towards Hoher Göll. Stop for lunch or coffee and cake, outside on the terrace when the weather suits or inside by the large windows.
Current winter hours are 11 am–4 pm, with the kitchen serving 11:30 am–3:30 pm. It closes on Mondays and Wednesdays, with additional closure dates and changes in poor weather possible. If lunch here is part of your plan, confirm on +49 8652 2997.
A winter drive or a day on skis
The panorama road is generally open year-round. Snow, ice and temporary closures can still affect access; after fresh snowfall, check with the toll station before driving up.
When the ski area is operating, the slopes below the road are mostly easy, with an intermediate section as well. The family lift serves broad practice slopes. Experienced skiers can use the roughly six-kilometre descent to Oberau when there is enough snow. This is a natural-snow area, so check which lifts and runs are open for your day.
Make a walking day of it
In the hiking season, combine the drive with the walk to Purtschellerhaus. From Ahornkaser, descend to Eckersattel, then climb towards the hut at 1,692 metres. Allow about an hour and a quarter outward, plus the return and your hut stop.
The border runs through the building, and its terraces look into both valleys. The hut usually opens from mid-May to mid-October, depending on weather, and is closed in winter. Treat this as a mountain walk with suitable footwear and enough time.
